Pencils, backpacks, folders and other supplies are popping up in stores and commercials, marking the end of summer and the start of the back-to-school season.  But we’re not ready to say good-bye to summer just yet!  Are you?

So let’s take a look back at a few highlights of what we learned this summer before the long sunny days are just a memory.

  • Storytelling is one of the most important elements to successful fundraising. Being able to share the stories of the people you serve gives donors an opportunity to connect on an emotional level.  Be clear and direct in explaining the need.  Don’t forget to use rich images and videos to complement the message and emphasize the emotion.
  • Millennials are the most philanthropic generation.  This socially conscious group wants to work for companies that are focused on corporate social responsibility, and they are eager to support organizations with their time and money.  Meet these donors where they’re at, which means online, through mobile giving and social media.  Include CaringCent in your outreach!
  • Social media continues to provide unique opportunities to engage with your audience.  While your organization may not need to be on every platform, consider who your target donors are and determine what social media they use.  Facebook is still the leader of the pack in the social media race, even as a fundraising outlet. But don’t discount the benefits of Pinterest, Snapchat, and Instagram, all of which can provide the visual (photo and video) inspiration your donors need to give.  Tip: Consider the new Stories feature on Instagram as a way to communicate with young donors and volunteers during an event.
  • Nonprofits need to determine if federal overtime guidelines apply to them.  The new Overtime Final Rule goes into effect December 1, 2016.  That’s less than four months away.  Learn more at the federal Department of Labor website.
